Best for SPECTACULAR VIEWS

Recommended for GEOLOGY FANS

Split open by shifting tectonic plates thousands of years ago, the Al Shaq mountain range is a geological wonder. Meaning ‘to rip’ in Arabic, Al Shaq lives up to its name with a deep tear in the landscape forming the spectacular Shaq Wadi al A’las. Finding a vantage point high above the canyon and staring into its depths is an absolute must during this drive.

  Shaq Wadi al A’las

The canyon of Shaq Wadi al A’las is situated between Jabal Iraq and Jabal al Muhawwar. Although popular with visitors, this area is unspoilt and peaceful. For thrill seekers, it is possible to stand with one foot on either side of where the tear in the landscape begins, or for those brave enough, head to the overhang at the canyon’s edge for a stunning view.

  Red Rock Ranges

Spanning more than 25km, there’s plenty of rocky terrain to explore. You can experience the canyon of Shaq Wadi al A’las in an entirely different way by accessing the hiking trails near the canyon’s edge.

Batcave
THE COLOUR OF SAND

Throughout Saudi Arabia, the sandy landscape changes colour – from coral-coloured sand dunes to the red sands of the Hisma Desert and the black sands at Harrat al Shaqah. According to experts, the colour of sand is derived from its mineral composition. The vivid red-orange hue found at Hisma Desert is due to the presence of iron-oxide coating the individual grains of sand. Natural occurrences of soil erosion or volcanic activity where new minerals are introduced can also affect the colour of sand.

  Shaq Wadi al A’las Plain

An excellent detour, the Shaq Wadi al A’las Plain offers 360-degree views and lower temperatures, as it sits at an elevation of 1,000m. Explore this area at your leisure and find a suitable flat spot to enjoy a picnic, or spend the night camped out under the stars.
