Driving EASY DESERT TRACKS

Best for CAPTURING PHOTOS

Recommended for CAMPING AND SCENIC PICNICS

Located in a relatively flat basin, novice off-road drivers will have no problem navigating this route. A natural wonder of the Arabian Peninsula, the unusual formation of An Naslah Rock is perfect for a fun day out. Not only does this terrain offer an easy drive, it also holds plenty of opportunities to learn more about the region’s past.

This route follows a short and sandy path between stark outcrops, about 250km from Tabuk city. Make sure to bring a sweater as there can be a chilly breeze due to an elevation of around 100m. Along the track you will find plenty of places suitable for camping, making this an ideal route for a weekend excursion.

   An Naslah Rock

The highlight of this route is the marvel that is An Naslah Rock. Measuring in at 9m tall, An Naslah Rock is split right down the middle and stands on a surprisingly small base. The almost perfectly straight split has created a mirrored image of the rock – the exact cause of this unusual feature is yet to be determined. The rock has easily become one of the more popular tourist attractions in Saudi Arabia. It also features ancient Thamudic petroglyphs dating back thousands of years.

GUIDED BY NATURE

Did you know that the Bedouins used to depend on their natural environment to help navigate through the desert? They would use sand dunes to determine which way the wind was blowing. If a sand dune runs from north to south, it means the prevailing wind is from the east. At night, they would use the moon and stars to guide their path. To this day, these techniques are still a great way for people to navigate.

  Tayma

The town of Tayma, or Taima, is home to several historical heritage sites that make it an interesting destination for enthusiasts of culture and history. Visitors to the area can explore the historic 2m thick walls of Al Hamra Palace, which were constructed out of cut stone. The Bir Haddaj well, which dates back to at least the 6th century BCE, has been restored to its original form and optimised to ensure sufficient water access in the region. Also, make sure to stop at the Taima Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography for further insights into the region’s long and rich history.
