Wadi Khadrah
Lush greenery and rocky tracks
555km

Driving EASY WITH TRICKY BITS

Best for SOAKING UP THE ATMOSPHERE

Recommended for QUICK ESCAPE FROM THE CITY

Wadi Khadrah is one of the most remarkable in this area. An easy drive will bring you to the main highlight of this route, the wadi’s lush greenery and peaceful flowing water. But if this is too tame and you want to venture further, the surrounding mountain’s rocky terrain offers a perfect dose of off-road action.

This route provides a distinct contrast of landscapes – the greenery of the fertile wadi-bed and the rocky, barren surrounding mountains. The track to the wadi is easy-going. You can then spend an hour or two enjoying the lush, green wadi landscape.

After this point, the route becomes more challenging. The further you go, the rockier the ride, so drive carefully as you ascend to the top of the plateaued mountain. This part of the drive might not be as scenic as the greenery of the wadi bed, but the narrow and unestablished paths certainly add the thrill factor. If this wasn’t enough, this route is also home to one of the largest and most impressive ruined villages in the region.

  Stone Structures

The remains of this ancient human settlement cover an area larger than a football field. Get up close to the stone walls for a detailed view of the mysterious symbols carved into the facade, but also make sure you get to higher ground so you can fully appreciate the site from an aerial view.

  Wadi Khadrah

The blue-green water flows gently beneath the jagged mountains making this a perfect spot for a picnic. The watering hole in this hot and largely dry mountainous area attracts a wide variety of animals, and it is also where local farmers bring their herds to drink.

Batcave
PETROGLYPHS OF SAUDI ARABIA

The Kingdom is home to more than 4,000 registered archaeological sites and more than 1,500 pieces of rock art, known as petroglyphs. The earliest examples date back to the early Neolithic era, depicting the way of life and beliefs from this period through rock engraving.

  Wadi Hiking

The wadi offers hiking for all abilities. You can take a relaxing stroll along the flat wadi bed or attempt the more challenging tracks that wind up the nearby mountains. If you follow some of the mountain tracks, you might discover some quiet villages and farms on your way.

DRIVING DIRECTION

With a few tricky bits, this route is fairly easy to follow. After exiting the main road, there are established tracks to follow all the way to the end.

1     From the paved road continue on to the track until it splits in two.

2      Veer right, following the track to explore Echo Valley or continue straight.

3     Bear left, following the track in a loop to explore the wadi and stone structures. There are also plenty of hiking tracks to enjoy.

4      Explore the seasonal pools and hiking trails. Once you have explored, head back to the start of the loop and turn left to head out to Wadi Marr and some more hiking opportunities.
