Driving ROCK CRAWLING

Best for PRACTISING MOUNTAIN DRIVING

Recommended for GETTING OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Driving through the mountains and wadi beds of Jibal Radwa makes for a rocky adventure. The bumpy drive takes you over rocks and gravel as you twist and turn along mountain paths and past giant boulders. There are many branching paths to explore, and plenty of stunning views to admire.

From relaxed beginnings, this route soon gets challenging as the track winds its way up the steep mountain. This demanding start is worth it though, as the summit provides some amazing views over the expanse of mountains and wadis below.

The rocky tracks then give way to flat, sandy wadi beds full of boulders shaped by centuries of water flow. Despite the mostly-flat surface, the rocks prevent you from picking up the pace. Take your time, enjoy the view, and perhaps make the most of the comfortable terrain and pitch your tent for the night.

  Al Jabiriyah Village

This area was once Al Jabiriyah village, and the ruined houses can be seen dotted throughout the built-up area of As Suwayq. The stone and mudbrick houses are scattered along this road and up into the foothills that surround it. Some of the newer houses have used the shells of the ruins in their construction, creating a fusion of contemporary and traditional architecture.

  Terraced Palm Plantation

Whilst renowned for its desert climate, there are areas in Saudi Arabia that see rainfall throughout the year. This area is hot, but there is intermittent rain and the secret to the lush, green plantation here is the terraces built to harvest the downpour. This pop of greenery offers a lovely contrast to the surrounding rugged landscape on this drive.

  Taba'at Nazza Water Spring

Depending on the time of the year, natural water runs through the valley. Take a hike through to see first-hand the wildlife that makes its temporary home here during the wet season.

  Viewpoint from Jibal Radwa

The mountain’s remoteness makes it an extraordinary place to explore, with views overlooking the wadi tracks and mountains in the distance. The cool air high up makes it a perfect place for a leisurely hike to take in these panoramic views.

DRIVING DIRECTION

This route is easy to navigate, following well marked tracks across wadis and through mountains.

1      Turn right 3km after Al Jabiriyah Village to begin the route. Continue on the track for 10km until you reach a track through Wadi Thuma.

2     Turn left or right and follow these tracks to explore Wadi Thuma – it’s a good place to set up camp. Leave the wadi behind and head back on the route.

3      The track will converge with a paved road. Take a right to continue.

4     Take a right following the paved road into the mountains.

5      Park your vehicle at the end of the paved road. Hop out for a short hike to reach the spring before heading back down.

6      z*Ensure that you have a spare tyre with you as some rocks are jagged and may shred your tyres.
