Driving PAVED BUT WITH SOME ROCKY OFF-ROAD

Best for A BIRD'S-EYE VIEW

Recommended for LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE AREA

The summit of Jabal Dakah provides a panoramic view of the rose garden of Taif. As you look down onto the numerous farms in the valleys below, it is clear that agriculture is the predominant way of life in this area. Once you have marvelled at these farms from a distance, a trip to a perfume farm and visitor centre on this route is the perfect chance to see first-hand how this unique agronomy operates.

This route is mostly paved, so if you are looking for a more sedate trip, this is the route for you. For those looking for more of a challenge, there is a section of tough rock crawling towards the end of the drive, which will take you to some stunning views.

Once you have taken time to admire the views from Jabal Dakah, the route takes you past farm plains and rocky outcrops and gets increasingly narrow and twisted, so take your time. There are several ruins just off the route offering great places to explore and even camp.

The highlight of this route is the rose farm perched on top of a mountain. The area has been developed into an extensive visitor centre by a local family. Sipping a coffee overlooking the terraces of rose trees is a great way to spend an hour or two before heading off to complete the route.

  Jabal Dakah

Sitting at approximately 2,700m above sea level, Jabal Dakah is the highest peak in the area. The mountain is skirted by juniper trees that gradually thin out towards its summit. To enjoy the astonishing views, a sizeable viewing platform with ample parking sits at its peak. Visiting at sunrise or sunset is highly recommended.

Batcave
THE TAIF ROSE

Little is known about the origins of the rose, but it thrives in the higher altitude and mountainous landscape of the region. Its soft, powdery rose scent has made it one of the most popular fragrances in the Arab world and is used by some of the biggest perfume houses in the world. The culture and traditions surrounding the rose are celebrated annually at the Taif Rose Festival.

  Perfume Farm and Visitor Centre

Whilst local farmers are often happy to show you around their plantations, this farm high in the mountains has been developed to provide tourists with a proper insight into rose farming. Alongside the farm and factory there is also a coffee shop, restaurant, shop and small lounges for hire with incredible views over the terraced fields below.
