An oasis-like dune pool
157km

Driving BEGINNER TO ADVANCED

Best for PICNICS IN THE DUNES

Recommended for A DESERT TRIP NEAR THE CITY

Discover unique natural phenomena on this route; it has it all. A year-round oasis with a desert pool offers waterside tranquillity – its greenery standing out in dramatic contrast to the red sands beyond, making it an ideal playground for classic dune driving for a range of abilities. Learn also about salt production in this region and experience the Arabian Peninsula’s salt-crusted sand flats.

Batcave
When driving across sabkha, the mixture of salt, sand, sticky clay and mud poses a set of unique challenges. In dry weather, the hard surface is usually tough and durable, but if it becomes wet from rain, the salts dissolve. This can make it treacherous to drive across – even the hardiest vehicle is liable to get stuck. Drivers should be cautious and see the ‘Driving’ section for more information.

Driving along expansive plains, this route takes in a number of intriguing sights including beautiful dunes, a natural desert pool and salty sandflats. The drive is manageable for beginners, while at the same time holding interest for advanced off-roaders, who can head deeper into the dunes of ‘Urayq al Bildan.

   Lake Prodan

Most setting off on this route will understandably want to head directly for the oasis-like pool at the foot of the dunes, which is often remarkably full of water. However, it may dry up during the summer. Surrounded by thick palm trees, the pool is an unusual sight among otherwise parched surrounds and attracts picnicking day-trippers. There are some shaded areas in which to rest awhile or even camp overnight.

WATER WISE

Think before taking a dip. There can be high levels of bacteria in the water because of the many visitors – humans, goats and donkeys – that frequent the area. Be cautious, especially if anyone in your party has a weaker than normal immune system (such as children and the elderly). Don’t ingest the water or get it in your eyes or on broken skin.

  ‘Urayq al Bildan Desert

‘Urayq al Bildan has some excellent rolling dunes that will entice and challenge every level of driver – simply find a track and head in.

FLAT, SALT-ENCRUSTED TERRAIN

Much of the surrounding landscape elsewhere on the route are sabkha, which is common in the semiarid regions of the Arabian Peninsula. Sabkha are caused by the evaporation of saltwater, which leaves an accumulation of precipitated salt minerals at, and just below, the surface. The high level of salt in the ground is particularly important for the area of Al Qasab, which is one of the primary sources of salt in Saudi Arabia.

  Al Qasab Salt Basins

For those interested in the process of collecting salt– especially those with kids in tow – it’s possible to visit Al Qasab’s salt basins where you can explore the salt mounds and learn all about salt extraction.

PICTURE THE PAST

It’s fascinating to explore Riyadh’s ancient mud villages and imagine what life must have been like decades – if not centuries – ago. The narrow alleys and mudbuilt homes at Al Qasab and Tharmada are among the most interesting, constructed among palm groves and wells. Tharmada oasis in particular, was known for its abundant water.

  Al Qasab Old Town

Consider a visit to Al Qasab Old Town for an experience that will bring Saudi Arabian culture to the forefront. Visitors can explore the house of Sheikh Abdullah bin Abdul Wahab bin Zahem to learn more about the history and rich heritage of Al Qasab. If visiting during rainy season, you can also stop by Al Ekreshiya Lake – located less than 20km from town – for a relaxing break.

DRIVING DIRECTION

The dry, parched earth along this route melds into flat salt plains known as 'sabkha', which can be treacherous to drive across. Stick to the route to avoid getting stuck. The dunes beyond offer sublime desert driving.

1     Turn left off Highway 546 and continue on the paved road. Just before the bend, head out on the
off-road track in front of you.

2     Take the track on the right, before the dunes. Continue driving along the base of the dunes for 5km.

3     Take a left for Lake Prodan and to explore the desert.

4     You can cut the corner here and head back to the main road, or continue on the dry, rubbly plains that lead to the Al Qasab Salt Basins.

5     After reaching the road, turn right to drive towards Al Qasab Old Town or turn left for Tharmada Heritage Village (13.5km).
