Driving MODERATE GRAVEL TRACKS

Best for CAMPING AND HIKING

Recommended for A DAY OF UNPLANNED EXPLORING

Raised above the surrounding landscape, Tawr al Hsan is a dark shelf of rock that’s largely uniform in height. Its flat summit is home to farms and seasonal lakes alongside old ruined walls that hint at past settlements. You can drive, hike and scramble over this shelf of rock, and the views from its edges are spectacular.

The gravel wadi track at the beginning of this route takes you through a wadi and then up into the hills on the edge of Tawr Al Hsan. The dark gravel track sits within the escarpment and you follow the cliff edge before emerging out on top.

The route isn’t circular, so follow the various forks to fully explore the landscape. At the end of the route, you can hike out towards a seasonal lake at the edge of the mountain.

Cliff Drive

The track that runs along the escarpment provides a panoramic view of the mountains and wadis that sit below. The cliff is a jagged wall that juts out of the landscape. In contrast to the colourful rock formations along other routes, the rock here is mostly black and grey.

Batcave
A BOUNTIFUL REGION

Many of these routes take you past farmland. With the country's highest peaks situated in the south, the annual rainfall and lower temperatures at altitude are perfect for cultivation. A wide variety of crops are produced including fruit, and an improvement in irrigation across the area has increased yield dramatically. As part of the region’s celebration of its heritage, an annual Grape and Seasonal Fruits Festival takes place every year in Abha to help local farmers showcase their produce.

Tawr al Hsan

The flat mountain of Tawr Al Hasn is unlike the other towering summits in the area. From above, this mountain looks like an island floating on the landscape below. Its plains are being utilised for farming and the ruins of low walls dotted across its surface, suggest previous settlers did the same. Its high altitude makes it wet, and seasonal lakes and manmade ponds are a common sight on the mountain top.

Views from the Top

The steep drop from the mountain escarpment means there are plenty of exceptional views to be enjoyed along the cliff edges. There are particularly impressive panoramas from the mountain top, where the black mountains can be seen fading to blue in the distance.
