Driving CHALLENGING AND STEEP

Best for MOUNTAIN PURSUITS

Recommended for CAMPING IN THE PLATEAU

An abandoned farm plain high in the mountain is the perfect place to spend some time. Whether it’s a leisurely hike, a more energetic rock scramble or a night under the stars, this area is perfect for some mountain fun.

The start of this route is a leisurely trip along a paved road leading to some exquisite horticulture – the largest perennial trees in the Kingdom and some rose farms. The off-road sections are a stark contrast, with the drive up to the abandoned farm plain following a series of hair-pin bends and sheer drops. As you wind your way through, the stunning views make the stomach-flipping drive worthwhile.

Arrival at the abandoned farm plain is a welcome relief. The tranquil spot is popular with locals, and you may even get invited to join a group for traditional coffee and dates. The flat, open space is perfect to spend time relaxing or doing something a little more adventurous.

Whilst not as hair-raising, the route down from the plain is a challenging rock crawl. There are areas where the rock closes in near the track and it is worth bringing a hammer so you can tap away any sections threatening to do damage to your car.

  Largest Perennial Trees

Located in a barren stretch of desert, these eucalyptus trees are quite a departure from the low shrubbery common to the area. The willowy stature of the trees makes them seem out of place in the desert, but they have clearly lived long lives. Standing at approximately 35m high, they are an impressive sight.

ROSE FARMS

Taif has a long history of rose farming and is often referred to as the ‘City of Roses’. The city is even home to the Taif rose which is farmed in the surrounding wadis and mountains. This route will take you past a series of rose farms, most of which are nestled along the valley floor. If you visit in April, the flowers will be in bloom, covering the valley in a blanket of pink.

  Abandoned Farm Plain

If you are looking to do some camping then spending a night on this abandoned farm plain is a great option. And in addition to the nearby hiking and climbing, there are also abandoned buildings and an old well to explore. With only a series of low peaks surrounding it, the sky is vast in this mountain idyll, making for some stunning stargazing.

DRIVING DIRECTION

There are multiple tracks that veer off from the main route, offering the opportunity to really explore the At Tariqah area.

1      From the main road, turn right onto a paved road and continue for 4km.

2     When the road splits, bear right.

3     Turn left and follow the road to explore Wadi al Makhadah. Return the way you came and continue along the route.

4     When the paved road turns into a well-marked track, proceed to the right to enjoy some great camping spots. If you don’t want to do any extra exploring, head left to the abandoned farm plain.
