Wadi Lajb
A wet wadi scramble
733km

Driving EASY ESTABLISHED TRACK AND MODERATE WADI DRIVE

Best for CONFIDENT HIKERS

Recommended for A DAY OF CLIMBING AND SPLASHING ABOUT

This wadi hike – or more of a scramble – through streams, pools and over rocks is an unforgettable experience. The wadi sits in a rift valley, the towering cliff faces the result of tectonic activity ripping apart the mountains. Despite the blue skies, it feels subterranean as you walk, climb and swim beneath the mountains.

The off-road route that takes you to Wadi Lajb via the Raydan Valley is a classic wadi drive – a gravel track which weaves in and out of rocky outcrops.

Your arrival at the wadi is signalled by a wall of rock and trees that close in on the track ahead. To continue, you must go on foot.

Once you have explored, head back the way you came and turn left where it’s signposted for Wadi Lajb. This gravel track has been developed to make access easier. The drive ends at a car park with a restaurant and restrooms. The hike from here is the best part of this route.

Wadi Lajb

Most wadis in Saudi Arabia sit in open plains, snaking through low-lying rocky outcrops – but Wadi Lajb is different. This beautiful wadi is located in a rift valley, lying beneath the towering rock faces of Jabal al Qahar, Jabal Shaqra and Jabal Quwarah. Situated at the base of these mountains, it is fed by the rainfall that hits the summits making it wet all year round.

Unfortunately, what makes this wadi beautiful is also what makes it dangerous. The runoff from these mountains can flood this wadi quickly. If the wadi is likely to flood, police will arrive and tell adventurers to leave.

LOCAL GUIDES

Whilst discovering a new destination in your own group is enjoyable, hiring a local guide can improve the quality of your experience. Locals will provide unique insights into the culture and history of the area, help you find the best food and uncover lesser-known places of interest. Guides can be found by asking at hotels and restaurants or by searching the internet.

Wadi Lajb Hiking

One for physically fit off-roaders, the hike through the wadi is a wet scramble through crystal clear pools and over rocks. There are two options for the wadi hike; the left track takes you to the biggest pool. As you make your way along, plants trail down the cliff edges, and in some areas, shelves of rock jut out of the cliff face where small forests have grown suspended above the wadi. Rich with wildlife, including birds and lizards, the screech of baboons can also be heard echoing throughout the valley.
