Driving EASY IN THE WADI, TRICKY ON THE MOUNTAIN

Best for A CHALLENGE

Recommended for ROCK CRAWLING AND CAMPING

The landscape of Saudi Arabia is spectacular and diverse, and this route covers it all: a sandy wadi, epic rock crawling, lush agricultural plateaus, a partially abandoned farming village and a waterfall that, depending on the time of year, crashes into the valley below.

The paved road at the start of this route takes you through a village until you turn off at a mosque into a wide-open wadi. Enjoy the smooth ride while you can, as you make your way down the easy gravel track towards the mountain in the distance. What awaits is a steep mountain ascent that will lead you over to Khasha village. Rocky throughout, this track is tough going in places, but it is an excellent chance to practice your rock-crawling skills.

Once you have mastered the mountain, you can explore the partially abandoned village of Khasha, then head on to the waterfall for either a paddle in the water, or a rock scramble depending on the time of year.

  Khasha Waterfall

In the dry season, your arrival at the waterfall is signalled by a change in the surface of the rocks. The jagged, dry stones have been smoothed out by centuries of heavy water flow and have become marble-like slabs. In the rainy season this area is a rushing torrent of water, so be cautious as it flows straight over the ridge crashing into the valley floor below.

  Khasha Village

The half-abandoned village marks the halfway point on this route. Still being actively farmed, Khasha Village provides a welcome slice of green in the dusty mountain plateau. The goat farm and crop fields sit amongst abandoned buildings including a crumbling mosque. Make sure you scramble over the low-lying rocks and explore the stone well which can be found on a disused strip of farmland.

Batcave
BEETLING ABOUT

Beetles are a common sight in the Kingdom, especially in the west. You can’t walk far without spotting a pitted beetle (Adesmia cancellata). Highly successful desert creatures, they are particularly noticeable as they remain active in the day and scurry about at a surprising speed.

  Khasha Tough Route

If the rocky road over to Khasha village wasn’t enough excitement, this route also includes the opportunity to tackle a toe-curling rock crawl suitable for only the most hardened off-roaders. Starting at the end of the route, this optional adventure must only be undertaken with the correct vehicle, supplies and skill level.

DRIVING DIRECTION

This route follows well-marked tracks, navigating wadi and mountainous terrain. If you’re up for a challenge, this route will offer just that.

1     Turn right off Highway 15, continuing along a paved road.

2     The paved road will turn to easily visible tracks that head towards the mountain.

3     When the track splits, bear right to visit the waterfall. Keep left to explore the village.

4     Proceed with the track if you have the proper experience and vehicle to endure this challenging terrain.
