Driving EASY GRAVEL TRACKS

Best for FAMILIES AND BEGINNER DRIVERS

Recommended for A DAY TRIP VIA AL QASAB OLD TOWN

The craggy foothills and trails of this ‘Moon Valley’ offer modest but enjoyable hiking and the opportunity to find fascinating fossils. With easy-to-follow gravel tracks, it’s an ideal introductory trip for novice off-roaders still building their confidence. The route can be paired with a trip to Al Qasab Old Town for insight into traditional Najdi architecture and the life of yesteryear.

  Ash Shafi'i

Natural forces have sculpted a series of striking cliff formations along the Tuwayq escarpment which warrant exploration, and the moonscape-like terrain in the Ash Shafi’i area is just one part of the great range that is easily accessible from Riyadh. Once you reach the plateau, you can watch camels plod in sequence across the vast plains and pick a spot in the valley below for camping overnight.

  Al Qasab Old Town

A short distance from the route, Al Qasab Old Town is an excellent site for some cultural immersion. Known for the production of salt and wheat, Al Qasab has been a town since the pre-Islamic era. Visitors can stroll through one of the oldest markets in the Najd region, taking in the various sights and smells, or visit a traditional salt factory.

WATER, STRAW AND OTHER FIBROUS MATERIALS WERE ADDED TO A SOIL AND SILT MIXTURE TO CREATE THE MUDBRICKS USED TO BUILD AL QASAB OLD TOWN.

NAJDI ARCHITECTURE

The ochre-coloured village of Al Qasab Old Town, located north-west of Riyadh, is surrounded by farmlands, flowing springs and verdant palm groves. It’s wonderful to spend time walking through its narrow passageways and admiring its distinct architecture. Decorated with small triangular windows typical of the Najdi style, the village houses were built using soil and silt gathered from the nearby wadis. The ceilings were thatched with palm branches and leaves, and mud plaster was used to add decorative elements to the exterior.

DRIVING DIRECTION

The route takes you along an easy-to-follow graded track across flat terrain. The track leads all the way to the cliffs of the Tuwayq escarpment.

1     Take a right off Highway 546 between the farms.

2     You can explore another track to the left, or continue along the route.

3     Explore the surrounding area. Take care if attempting to hike as the track is steep.
