586km

Driving EASY, TARMAC AND SANDY OFF-ROAD TRACKS

Best for CAMPING AND HIKING

Recommended for CHALLENGING HIKING AND SCRAMBLING

This easy drive is an opportunity to see a working wadi in action. Plantations are dotted along the base of the mountains, and herders can be seen moving their goats and camels through the valley. All of this takes place under the shadow of the epic peaks of Jabal Umm Sabir.

Sitting at the foot of the mountain drive that takes you up to the city of Taif, this route is perfect for a day away from the city. The towering peaks of Jabal Umm Sabir dominate the landscape and provide both stunning scenery and the opportunity for some adventurous hiking.

It’s a straightforward wadi drive, but there are some hidden gems tucked away ready to be explored. Kharrar Waterfall can be found nestled in the mountains off the main route and is the perfect place for a picnic and, depending on the time of year, a quick dip. For nature lovers, this area attracts a lot of wildlife including camels, frogs, butterflies and even baboons.

As you make you way along the wadi, the track takes you past some remarkable standalone rock formations that are excellent for climbing. As you near the end of the route, the track takes you into foothills where you will get the opportunity to look back over the impressive wadi laid out below.

Kharrar Waterfall

Depending on the time of year, the waterfall can be a torrent or just a trickle, but the area can be enjoyed regardless. Park near its base and relax in the waters, or strap on your backpack and walking shoes for a hike. The hike is closer to a scramble and the stones have been rounded through centuries of waterflow, so watch your step.

WADI DRIVING

This flat bed of Wadi Rahjan is a great drive for a beginner and whilst you can head out confidently it is important to be cautious as, the sandy track is scattered with rocks. The surrounding shrubbery is teeming with wildlife and there are plenty of abandoned homesteads to explore, including one that has been flattened by a toppled boulder.

Peaks of Jabal Umm Sabir

There are four large peaks that overlook the wadi and it’s worth heading off the main track to get a closer look. If you’re feeling adventurous, the hiking options on this route run through the foothills at the base of the peaks. A mix of sand and boulders, these challenging trails provide you with the best views of these impressive mountains.

DRIVING DIRECTION

Passing by numerous local farms, this route is a mixture of paved road and sandy tracks. Easily accessible, there’s plenty of opportunity to hike and set up camp.

1     Turn right off of Highway 15 and proceed for 4km.

2     Bear left and take the track through Wadi al Kharrar for hiking and a beautiful waterfall. Return to the main route.

3     The paved road will turn to sandy tracks leading you through Wadi Rahjan. You can also opt to bear right and partially continue on paved road.

4     When the road splits, keep left if you would like to stop and camp. Keep right to continue through the wadi and finish the route.
