Recommended for PEACE AND QUIET

The rough mountain track that takes you through the Hajur Mountains to Wadi Hajur is a stark contrast to the peaceful, green valley that makes up most of this route. Once you enter this quiet wadi, relax after the rough ride and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. The flowing water and wide variety of wildlife make it an excellent place to while away an hour or two.

This route begins 95km from Rabigh, at the quiet village of Hajur. The start of the drive on a well-paved track brings you through palm plantations with silhouettes of the mountains in the far distance.

The route then takes you off on a sand and gravel track through twisting mountain terrain. Driving along this track is easy, but there are stretches of unestablished track which will prove more challenging. Take time to stop at some of the viewpoints as you make your way over the mountains.

As you descend into the wadi, you will pass through thorny trees which may scratch your car, so take it slow. Come to the wadi prepared to camp, hike, bike, birdwatch and make the most of this serene mountain oasis.

  The Big Curve

The start of the route takes you along an established track through low-lying mountains. Twists and turns in the track signal the approach to Wadi Hajur. The big curve is your first glimpse of the wadi, a huge turn in the wadi path with a flat, fertile plain laid out before it. Drive or hike down to explore this oasis of shrub and palm trees which is also home to the ruins of old settlements.

Batcave
PLIGRIMS, SETTLERS, TRAVELLERS

A vital crossroads between Asia, Africa and Europe, Saudi Arabia was home to one of the oldest trade routes in the world. This rich, multicultural history has left behind evidence of kingdoms and civilisations dating back thousands of years. Some of the heritage that remains – ruins, forts and abandoned settlements – are still waiting for researchers to reveal the part they played in the Kingdom’s diverse and fascinating history.

  Wadi Hajur

With the backdrop of the stunning plateau mountains, Wadi Hajur is an excellent route for memorable wildlife sightings and tranquil camping spots. The blue-green water that ripples gently at the foot of the mountains has created a fertile habitat which local farmers utilise to grow crops and rear cattle.

DRIVING DIRECTION

Easily accessible from the main road, this route takes you across a mix of paved and gravel tracks through the wadi.
